Art therapy is based on the principle that art is healing. The act of art-making in its own right is life-affirming and meaningful. The use of art-making in therapy can be a tangible and concrete way to see clearly what is happening inside of us, like a mirror reflecting internal core beliefs, thoughts and feelings otherwise difficult to access. Traumatic experiences and memories can be especially tricky to access and resolve by solely talking about them. Art therapy can be a powerful modality in re-processing and integrating traumatic material otherwise “stuck” in the brain. Art therapy is particularly helpful for kids, teens and adults who cannot find words to communicate their internal experiences. Art therapy requires no previous artistic skill, merely the willingness to make a mark. Through the art therapy process we become detectives looking for clues, active pursuers of our truth.
